AVID
The mission for AVID students is to ensure that all are fully prepared for college and career success. The meticulously crafted curriculum gives students unparalleled access to rigorous coursework, leadership development, and character training.
AVID students are expected to:
- maintain a grade "C" or higher in all of their respected classes, especially in their core classes and foreign language classes
- come to the AVID class tutorials on Tuesdays and Thursdays prepared for class, with TRFs (Tutorial Refection Forms) completed.
- maintain an agenda and a homework calendar. In addition, it is recommended that all students should maintain a weekly homework calendar. This serves as a time management checklist and to help students complete all assignments while considering what other responsibilities they may have in the evening. Students may keep a monthly calendar if they wish, to help them visualize assignments over a period of time.
Planner/Agenda
Students must fill out their planner on a weekly basis with any homework, tests, quizzes, projects, (etc.). The notes in the planner must be specific and detailed. If there is nothing for class that day, draw an "X" do not leave the square blank.
Homework
AVID students have homework every day. The homework consists of completing Cornell
Notes and completing TRFs the day before a tutorial.
Cornell Notes
Cornell Notes are a proven, focused note taking method. When used appropriately,
students are guaranteed to increase their knowledge and raise their grades in any given
class. Cornell Notes are taken during class lectures, class power points, class readings, or
any class activities in which the students are responsible to take down information. In order to receive full credit for their notes, students must adhere to a strict note-taking format that includes:
- Full heading
- Specific topic
- Essential question
- Notes on the right side highlighted with key words and phrases
- Main ideas and questions in the left column
- A summary at the end of the notes
Students may take Cornell Notes in a spiral notebook or on notebook paper as required
by the content area teacher. However, students are expected to use the Cornell Note
format and repetition strategies and review the notes consistently.
